Holiness and Repentance

In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God gives His people a promise of restoration. This promise is not given automatically. It comes with conditions that require a change of heart and life. God desires His people to return to Him through holiness and repentance.

The Church in Borneo has witnessed the extraordinary grace of God. Over the decades, God has raised up many churches, developed spiritual leaders, mobilised mission ministries, and brought many people to faith in Jesus Christ. We are grateful for the legacy of faith left by the pioneers of the gospel who sacrificed much to make Christ known to communities throughout Borneo.

However, despite this growth, we must honestly ask ourselves: Is our spiritual life growing deeper, or are we merely maintaining religious traditions? Is our love for God still burning brightly, or has it become lukewarm because of busyness, materialism, compromise with sin, and the influence of the world? Are our churches increasing in numbers but decreasing in holiness and obedience to the Word of God?

True revival does not begin with bigger programmes or more advanced strategies. Revival begins when God’s people humble themselves, confess their sins, seek His face, and turn away from their wicked ways. This is God’s call to His people in 2 Chronicles 7:14. This verse reminds us that spiritual restoration always begins with holiness and repentance.

1. Holiness begins with a heart that puts God first

Holiness is not merely about avoiding visible sins. It is about living in obedience to the Word of God. A holy person continually seeks to please God in every area of life.

True repentance is not simply feeling guilty about the sins we have committed. It means making a firm decision to leave the wrong path and walk according to God’s will. Regret without a changed life is not genuine repentance. This verse also reveals four responses that God desires from His people: To pray earnestly to God. To repent with humble hearts. To turn away from wicked ways. To return to a life that follows God’s will. When God’s people respond in this way, He promises to: Hear their prayers. Forgive their sins. Restore their lives and bring healing to their land.

This principle remains relevant today. Spiritual restoration in an individual, a family, a church, or even a nation always begins with hearts that are willing to be made holy and to repent. God is still looking for people who will humble themselves, confess their sins, and sincerely seek His face.

Is there any attitude that needs to change? Do not delay in returning to God, because He is faithful to forgive, restore, and renew everyone who comes to Him with a sincere heart.
